Great post. I wonder at what point too much praise backfires and what the ramifications are. I know there have been studies of this in parenting, but I haven't seen in for the workplace.

After Priscilla Palmer's self development list my friend Jenny and I have decided to try to help build the self development community as well with a little contest. I would like to invite you, and anyone else interested, to find out more details at http://jenny-and-erin.com/2007/09/win-a-25-gift-certificate/.

Thank you for visiting. I am not really sure on the negative ramifications of excessive praise in the workplace. I have never personally worked with an organization or person who complained about receiving too much praise. I would be happy to hear from others who have witnessed this to hear what they experienced becuase I just have never run across it.

Hi Amy,

Good reminder. Praise and acknowledgement are as important to people as breathing! And receiving criticism, while possible devastating, at least means someone has noticed you are there. But begin ignored is tantamount to not existing...what could be worse? [It's the reason that some children will behave badly; because at least that way they can get the attention they are not getting in other ways.]

And in the workplace, surveys indicate that workers prefer a congenial work environment over extra pay or benefits. Certainly praise and catching them doing things right contribute to that congenial work environment.

I agree on this one, because if you ignore someone you really don't care about the person, but if you criticize .. you care enough to do so :)
